It doesn't get any easier for the 1-5 Pinconning Spartans who face powerful John Glenn this Friday on the road.
There was reason to cheer last week as the Spartan offense showed up strong as Quarterback Barrett Penix scored three times for the home team against the Tawas Braves.
Penix opened the scoring for the Spartans with an eight-yard run to paydirt in the first quarter.
But his heroics weren't enough to offset an offensive barrage by the vistors. The win put Tawas in a tie for the lead in the North East Michigan Conference with Ogemaw Heights and Standish Sterling.
Coach Chip Kleinhans must have broken out in a cold sweat after his squad fumbled the opening kickoff, giving the ball to the Braves on their 20 yard line.
In fact four turnovers spelled doom for the hometowners, who otherwise may have made it close against a tough Tawas contingent.
Home fans were excited when the Spartans surged back for a 13-7 lead in the second quarter on a 36 yard strike from Penix to Tim Darby.
Two other Pinconning scores came on short passes from Penix to Brandon Delgado.
Running Back Alex Verlac of Tawas scored five TDs for the visitors while racking up 114 yards on 21 carries for a 5.4 yard average per carry.
