Tennis the Menace, the new mascot of the Midland Community Tennis Center, will have his coming out at the 20th annual Dow Corning Tennis Classic Feb. 3-10, 2008.

Tennis is Executive Director Mike Woody's secret weapon in attracting more young people, and adults, to the game.

Expect to see the flashy new character with a tennis ball head and Hollywood shades at parades, fairs, schools, festivals -- anywhere the MCTC can flash its tennis brand -- Play to Win -- and sell the game.

And, prepare to be amazed at the MCTC's new side entrance and turn-around drive providing better public access, and 25 additional parking spaces off East Wackerly Street.

Other improvements include:

  • Refurbished meeting rooms;

  • Additional restrooms (increased from two to eight);

  • Enclosed viewing area for tournament viewing;

    Protected walkway with secure access to courts 11-16 and the stadium court for the 2009 Dow Corning Classic.

    Public and private organizations funded the expansion-renovation in the northwest area of the club, said Mr. Woody. Supporters include Dow Corning, the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation and the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation.

    The MCTC has served as a catalyst for the growth of tennis in the area. Established in 1974, it has 16 indoor and 16 outdoor courts, 15 USPTA pros on staff, 3,500 members and 36 employees.

    Twenty-three tournaments sponsored each year include the Dow Corning Classic, a women's pro tour event and Michigan's only professional tournament. Erin Mazurek is tourney director.
