On Sunday night, some bank thermometers in Bay County read minus seven degrees.

Ice fishermen don't seem to care.

Close to fifty hearty ice fishermen were signed up and a number of walk-ins were on hand for the 7:00 p.m. Sunday night start of the three-day Walleye ice fishing school up at Frank's Great Outdoors (FGO) in Linwood.

"This is our 2nd year with the school," said FGO's Larry Gorske. "We have almost three times as many fishermen as we had last year," Gorske said.

Pro Walleye fishermen Mark Martin, Ross Grothe, Mark Brumbaugh and Mike Gofron were on hand to share tips and tricks to help the locals get the best of "old mister walleye."

The school stresses "safety first."

"Saginaw Bay can be a very dangerous place to fish if you don't pay attention to safety," said FGO's "Captain Andy" Gorske.

Items stressed during the Sunday night classroom session were: How to fish the Saginaw Bay; The effect of wind on the ice; Storms; and How and Why ice cracks move.

"Were here to have some fun, catch some fish but most of all to keep safe," said FGO's Pete Gorske.

The school continues Monday and Tuesday out on the ice.

It was standing room only as Saginaw Bay ice fishermen lined up to hear what the walleye pros had to say.
