Each year throughout the month of March, Bangor Central Elementary School has a reading challenge to entice their students to soak in the information and find ways to express what they learn!

This year, the chosen theme was "Destination America Reading Challenge". Students were assigned a particular state to read and learn about throughout the month of March.

The event was kicked off by Principal Diana Tuttle posing as The Statue of Liberty! Harpbeat of America also visited the school and did a musical performance for all grades to enjoy! Many other "guest readers" have made an appearance throughout this month's reading challenge such as the John Glenn Cheerleaders, retired Bangor Township teacher and board member, Barb Skowronski, Mike Bacigalupo, General Manager of the State Theatre, Dr. Kerr, Superintendent of Bangor Township School District and retired teacher, the Mayor of Bay City, Charles Brunner .

During Mayor Brunner's visit to the school this past Tuesday, he was asked numerous questions by the inquisitive children themselves.

"You can call me Charile", said Mayor Brunner, and that they did. Below are some of the questions posed to the Mayor from the "minds of babes" and Mayor Brunner's answers to those questions!

Q: "What is the worst part of being the Mayor?"

A: "The limited resources our city has at the present time causing job loss, high gas prices, taxes and utilities."

Q: "What is the best part of being Mayor?"

A: "Well, I would have to say, I got to marry a couple about three weeks ago, that was neat. Being here today has definitely been the best thing I have done as Mayor!"

Q: "What is your favorite food Mr. Mayor?"

A: "Pizza"

Q: "Michigan or Michigan State?"

A: "Well....ah....(clearing his throat with a wide smile on his face) let's see....I attended Central Michigan University, therefore, I would have to vote for them!"

Q: "What is your favorite movie?"

A: "That would be A Christmas Story, I love that movie!"

The children were very attentive to Mayor Brunner while reading the story book to them

Ms. Amy Gibson, retired 1st grade teacher from Pinconning and mother to Mrs. Metz, 4th grade Bangor Central teacher reads each and every year for this challenge!

Mike Bacigalupo, General Manager of the State Theatre was also featured as a guest reader for the challenge! The children are very familiar with Mike and his establishment as many field trip's are scheduled throughout the year to the State Theatre!

The student's truly have had an enjoyable experience this year, and I am speaking from experience as I have a 5th grader that will graduate this year from Bangor Central. What a learning adventure this month of March has been!

Bangor Central's recently remodeled Library has been the "place to be" for these children during the month of March, selecting their "read" for the challenge!

Each grade level participated in the event and had one state to focus on reading about and educating themselves on! The song's for the concert were also chosen in honor of these states!

Bangor Central Elementary School is winding down this month's "Destination America Reading Challenge" with a concert that was held at John Glenn on Wednesday evening, directed by Mrs. Judy Dale and a "State Fair" in house Thursday from 1-3p.m. The "State Fair" will feature original items from the very first State Fair held in St. Louis MO back in 1904, such as ice cream cones, fudge, games, passports, art contests and more!

"Destination America Concert" held on Wednesday evening at the John Glenn auditorium, which was filled to the brim to see their loved ones perform

The "soon to graduate" 5th graders have practiced their recorders for this concert for months! What a wonderful concert it was

Hundreds of family members showed up for the concert at John Glenn, it was standing room only by the beginning of the performances!
