Frankenmuth Farmers Market Opens
May 17, 2008 to October 18, 2008

The floodgates of local food, fun, and festivity are set to be released Saturday, May 17, from 8am-2pm as the Frankenmuth Farmers Market opens for its fourth season in downtown Frankenmuth.

With the mission to entertain, enrich, and educate growers and consumers as they trade local products and information, the Market runs 8am to 2pm every Saturday from May 17 to October 18, with a Christkindlmarkt (traditional Christmas Market) to be held Thanksgiving Weekend, November 28-30. Free parking can be found behind the Market, near Cass and Main St.

Many special plans for this year's opening will make attendance a must! Seventh graders Jacob P. and Zak S. will open the Market at 8am, having been crowned the 2008 Produce Princes.

Local middle schoolers were asked to pen their thoughts on the importance of farmers markets, with St. Lorenz Lutheran School's Dawn Mueller eagerly embracing the project with her students.

Jacob and Zak wrote the winning essays, earning their crowns as Produce Princes, having their essays featured in the 2008 Market Magazine, opening the Market, starring in the Market's Bavarian Festival Parade entry, and earning $25 each in Market Money. All essay entries will be available at http://www.frankenmuthfarmersmarket.org

Also for your reading pleasure, distributed locally in the Frankenmuth News and available for free at the Market, The 2008 Market Magazine will hit homes Thursday, May 15 to herald the Market's opening.

This 28-page booklet was created by the Market Board of Directors and Market Mistress Laurajeanne Kehn, containing thought-provoking articles, recipes, a calendar of events, farmer biographies, and more. This is the Market's third annual magazine, which has proven extremely successful.

Many farmers markets across the state have solicited the help of the Frankenmuth Farmers Market in publishing their own magazine, with the Frankenmuth organizers hosting a farmers market "boot camp" training session in Lansing on how to create their own version. The Magazine's authors will be on hand from 10am to 11am for an autograph signing session at the Market's opening, with the Frankenmuth Gemuetlichkeit Club's German folk songs filling the air at 11am.

Consumers are invited to join an e-newsletter list by emailing dbronner@chartermi.net. The Market is also looking for volunteers to staff its Information Booth, as well as $25 or $50 donations to the Frankenmuth Farmers Market to sponsor a daily event or an entire day at the Market, respectively. Donations can be mailed to Laurajeanne Kehn, 11585 King Road, Frankenmuth, MI 48734.

Market offerings include fresh, local produce, fresh coffee and soup, organic breads and grains, hand-made soaps, baked goods, herbs, bedding and potted plants, flowers, native Michigan plant species, other spring goods, and more.

Free live music, informational events, children's activities, and local artists every Saturday make for a very interactive Market as producers and consumers exchange fresh, local products while educating each other, inspiring community, and keeping our rural heritage alive.
