Salvation Army Honors Gilbertson, Seward, Capello for Volunteerism

Christmas in July Planned by Charitable Agency

The Bay City Salvation Army held their 1st annual volunteer awards ceremony Wednesday. Officials picked the top three people from that they felt best represented volunteerism.

Honorees were Sam Capello, Owner of Big Boy (Euclid Avenue), Eric Gilbertson, President of Saginaw Valley State University, and Mike Seward, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce President.

Dr. Jean Goodnow, President of Delta Community College introduced Eric Gilbertson. Fred Hollister, President of Bay Future Inc., introduced Mike Seward who could not be present for the ceremony. Bay City School Superintendent Carolyn Wierda spoke on behalf of Seward.

The Bay City Salvation Army is the oldest organization within the Bay County United Way Foundation, over 100 years!

Al Eichhorn who organized the event stated "It is wonderful giving out awards to people who truly volunteer within their communities."

The Salvation Army will be hosting a Christmas in July event the 3rd and 4th week of July this year. 7-11s throughout the community, Big Boy on Euclid and Monitor Pharmacy have offered to allow the Salvation Army to collect in from of their establishments during that time frame.

The Bay area Salvation Army is involved in many community activities such as the River Roar and Pig Gig.

The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen has been quite a success for the community. They serve over 100 people per day. They are open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 11am-1pm and Sunday from 12:30pm-1:30pm.
