Just for a change, the weather provided a challenge for the 2008 Dow River Roar. After years of clear skies and bright sun, the 2008 racers experienced overcast and a strong wind on Saturday followed by scattered thunderstorms on Sunday. The rain held off until just before the final race then sent many of the thousands of spectators scurrying for their vehicles. But a little rain is not going to stop these drivers. They work in a pretty wet environment regardless of the weather.

For most of the spectators, the action is all on the water. But there's a lot more that happens behind the scenes. Lou Howard at left is the APBA Inspector who insures a level playing field. "This is not your average boat race" said Howard. "This is a North American Championship event. We inspect the top two winners of each race then randomly select a third." Crew members dismantle the engine and the lower unit so Howard can check major parts. The fuel and weight are also checked. "It's rare to find intentional issues. More likely there could be an accidental fuel or weight problem."

After one heavy shower just before the final race, the rain tapered off for the fans who didn't mind getting a little wet. The sun came out for the final weigh in and the awards ceremony. As usual, it was a great race day in Bay City, wet or not!

Behind the scenes the pit crews insure that everything works.

Andy Rogers caught this great sequence of the yellow boat getting turned around!

A long day for one little fan while another finds a rain puddle all the entertainment she needs.

The traditional champagne spray takes on new significance when the entire
