New Rotary Year Commences

As the 2008-2009 Rotary Year begins, the Club said thanks to outgoing president Rob Clark. As his last official duty Rob passed the gavel and the president's pin to new president Deb Lutz.

As her first act as President, Deb passed the president-elect pin to Anne Trahan then presented a past-president pin to Rob along with a desk clock recognizing his year of service. The club will make a $100 contribution to the Polio Plus Challenge in Rob's name.

Following the traditional format, Deb presented her goals for the upcoming year, along with a promise to not insist on any singing at meeting.

Debs goals reflect the 2008-2008 Rotary International theme ?Make Dreams Real? as well as the Bay City Club?s Strategic Plan and Rotary's four avenues of service.

Regarding membership, Deb says the club needs to bring in 16 to 17 new members during the year. This will offset normal attrition and keep the club on track for strategic plan goal of 129 members by June 2009. Borrowing an idea from the Owosso club, Deb handed out business card sized invitations that members can use to invite guests. Rob Clark has agreed to continue the membership drive he started this year.

A new emphasis will be put on attendance and all members will be encouraged to attend 75%, which is missing no more than one meeting a month. John Bultrud and Kim Prime will work on attendance.

Deb asked everyone to work to make this be best fund raising year ever. The three largest fund raising projects are International Night at $35,000, the Golf Outing at $10,000 and the Newton Rotary Concert at $1,000.

The district goal for member giving is "Every Rotarian Every Year". The plan is to average $105 / member.

Over and above the normal giving is the Polio Plus Challenge that aims to finish the job of eradicating polio in the next three years. Our club was challenged to raise $15,000 over three years. Going far above that challenge, the club has in the first two months, almost reached the 3 year goal.

The club's International Project Committee is working on identifying a new project with close ties and possible personal involvement by our club members in Guatemala. The club will continue to improve literacy through dictionary and thesaurus projects. The Depot Project is nearing completion, and the ongoing Mutt Mitt and Riverwalk Gardens project will continue.

The Community Grant program will give another $10,000 to $12,000 to worthy projects in the local community and the club will select a new major project for the next five years.

Other goals include continuing the Vocational Days for students, hosting a Group Study Exchange team, and sponsoring Rotary Exchange students.

The year promises fun, excitement and opportunities for service and fellowship.
