Coining Around

Governor Granholm makes an upopular decision according to some

The quarter design chosen by Granholm

Yesterday, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced her design selection for the Michigan State quarter. Not everyone is happy with her choice.

The quarter chosen actually ranked fourth out of the most popular coins selected by Michigan residents in a poll last fall. It features the State surround by the Great Lakes.

And that's it.

One has to wonder why the Governor didn't select the most popular coin, which featured, along with an outline of the State, the Great Lakes, a lighthouse, a car, canoe, north star, and a white pine tree.

Does it have something to do with shrinking State coffers? Would the most popular coin have cost us something we don't know about?

Why else reject the coin that won first place out of contest with over 40,000 votes made by Michigan tax payers?

With her campaign to make Michigan's cities "cool" underway, you would have thought that the Governor would have madethat a factor in her decision-making process.

How cool is a state without any heritage? Without any commerce? Without any recognizeable claim to fame beyond a body of water that was here long before the State was?

Now obviously, this is a matter of opinion. Whether it was the Governor's personal opinion or that of her staff workers, I would like to know though.

Because if this is her/their idea of cool, I think we're in trouble.
