On Monday, September 15 in the gymnasium of Standish Sterling Central High School, a volleyball showdown was held between the Pinconning Spartans and the Standish Sterling Panthers.

The two varsity teams took center court at 7:30 pm to play a best-of-five game match. In the end, the Spartans spiked their way to 3-2 victory over the Panthers.

In game one, the Panthers scored first, but the Spartans came back with a vengeance. Devyn Podsiadlik went on the attack and spiked the ball over the net to score first for the Spartans. The ball was then handed over to the Spartan's first server, Sarah Schumacher, who became a strong service winner in the match. Schumacher tallied a total of 12 points in her first position as server for the game. The game ended in a Spartan victory, with the final score 25 to 19.

In the second game, the Spartans started off strong. Chelsea Adcock, who is one of the outside hitters for the Spartans, was the first to serve and quickly tallied 6 points for the team. But the Panthers bounced back and ran off 12 points in a row. The Spartans battled back. Schumacher went on the attack, hitting the volleys with force, scoring several times in the process. But while the Spartans continued to play hard, this 2nd game ended in a close Panthers win 25 to 23.

In the third game, the Spartans were the first to score as the Panthers trailed most of the game due to out of bound balls and fouls such as palming being called against them. But the Panthers held tough and made a comeback, and won the game by a very close margin of 27 to 25. In the fourth game, the Spartans came back determined. With it all on the line, the Spartans played offensively as one unit. The 4th game ended in a one-sided Spartans victory, 25 to 12.

In the fifth and final game, the rules changed slightly. Instead of playing to 25 points, they would be playing a 15-point tie-breaker -- but with the winning team would still have to win by two points. Play was fierce on both sides. The entire gym continuously erupted in cheers for one side or the other. But the tie-breaking game ended in a 15 to 10 victory for the Pinconning Spartans -- The Spartans won the volleyball match 3 games to two over the Panthers.
