It's not over... till it's over!

With the game of basketball, sometimes it is who ever has the hot hand that determines the outcome. This was the case for Bay City All Saints and Garber as they squared off in the Tip-Off Classics opening round at Garber High School.

Both teams played well, hustling to the ball, breaking press and executing that same press. In the first quarter, both teams seemed to execute well but it was the Garber hot hand that was the difference as they shot 9 of 16 from the floor. Buy the time Brent Eichhorn hit a three pointer just as time expired, Garber looked in command 20-13.

But looks can be misleading. All Saints change a couple faces on the court and became more patient when faced with the press. The result was a better job at moving the ball up the court which opened up their offense for better looks at the basket. Add to this the strong inside play of DeMario Walker and a three pointer by Derek Janer, the Cougars had erased the Dukes lead and tied it at 22-22.

Feeding on this new confidence, the Cougars turned up the defense, contesting more Garber shots and seeming to put Garber in a shooting deep freeze as the Dukes cooled to a 2-16 shooting quarter. In the mean time, Walker had heated up as he poured in 10 points in the second quarter and putting All Saints up 28-23 at the half.

The third quarter saw much the same as the Cougar defense held the Dukes to only 5 points for the second consecutive quarter while pumping in 13 of their own. Try as they might, the Dukes could not change this trend as the Cougars pushed their lead to 20 in the fourth quarter before finishing it off with a 58-42 win and a date in the Championship age against Pinconning. Game time is Wednesday, December 10 at 7:30 at All Saints.

For the night, DeMario Walker lead all scorers with 22 points with Drew Janer and Cameron Coburn adding 10 points each to the All Saints cause. Brent Eichhorn paced the Garber effort with Mike Schroeder scoring 8 and Jesse Kenniston adding 7 points.

It's an all out race to see who will get the loose ball.
