PRESS RELEASE: State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) today announced that his plan to create an income tax check-off option that provides Michigan residents with a convenient way to donate to the United Way has been signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm.
"With Michigan's harsh winter in full swing, many of our struggling families have come to rely on organizations like the United Way for needed assistance," Mayes said. "Unfortunately, our economic troubles have put significant strain on the resources charitable organizations have available. Under this new law, residents will find it easy to help their neighbors that are most in need."
Check-off boxes, which allow taxpayers to designate a portion of their tax return for donations, are commonly used on income tax forms. Mayes' plan, which received overwhelming bipartisan support, was passed along with a plan that will create a United Way fund within the Michigan Department of Treasury to distribute the money raised by the check-off option.
"I applaud the diligent and skillful work of the original sponsors of the bill package to work with fellow members and the Governor's office to create legislation that received such strong bipartisan support," said Scott Dzurka, President and CEO of the Michigan Association of United Ways.
The Michigan Association of United Ways is a nonprofit agency that was founded in 1947 by a group of community and labor leaders to simplify the gathering and distribution of funds that were received through charitable giving.
"I am excited that lawmakers from both parties could come together in support of Michigan families," Mayes said. "The United Way has spent years working to support our local communities and make life better for our residents. By making it easier to give back, we can stand with the United Way to help make a lasting impact in another person's life.
