Saturday, April 18, is the Mayor's Clean-up Day in Bay City

Here's your chance!

Volunteers are needed Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, to clean up one of the area's most used public facilities -- the 17.5 mile RailTrail/Riverwalk system.

Saturday also is Mayor's Clean-up Day in Bay City, announced Mayor Charles Brunner.

Gathering place for the RailTrail/Riverwalk cleanup will be the Bay County Community Center, 800 JFK Drive, in Veterans Memorial Park, according to Lisa Cleland of the Bay Area Community Foundation.

Cleanup starts at 9 a.m. and registration is appreciated, especially in the case of teams of volunteers, said Ms. Cleland.

Mayor Brunner is asking residents to keep the community clean, and city officials are making sure residents have the tools to help.

Saturday, April 18, is the Mayor's Clean-up Day in Bay City, and residents will have the opportunity to drop off household debris for free from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., all in an effort to keep streets and homes looking beautiful.

"Mayor Brunner is really big on cleaning up the city and is offering to help residents by providing dumpsters throughout the city," said Debbie Kiesel, redevelopment coordinator for the City of Bay City.

Dumpsters will be set up at four locations around the city to receive materials from Bay City residents only. The locations are:

  • Fisher Street Parking Lot (612 E. Fisher Street)

  • Cass Avenue Boat Launch (620 Harrison Street)

  • Defoe Park (601 Marquette Avenue)

  • City Hall Employee Parking Lot (301 Saginaw Street)

The RailTrail/Riverwalk was established and is funded by the Bay Area Community Foundation (BACF). The trail system is a cooperative partnership between all municipalities, parks departments, the Bay County Road Commission and the BACF RailTrail/Riverwalk Committee.

For the cleanup, garbage bags and lawn equipment will be provided by the Bay City Parks & Recreation Department. "We recommend wearing comfortable shoes, dressing appropriately for the weather and bringing garden gloves," said Ms. Cleland. Refreshments will be available.

The RailTrail/Riverwalk is a 17.5 mile network of pedestrian walkways that link downtown Bay City, Veterans Memorial Park and other parks and recreation areas, residential and agricultural areas of Portsmouth, Hampton and Bangor townships.

The network also is being extended to Pinconning, Standish, Saginaw and Midland.##
