Earning a degree in engineering without having to leave home in the tri-county area will soon get easier.

Informational sessions are slated this week for students at Delta College who want to have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering from Michigan Technological University, (MTU) Houghton.

The new engineering opportunity locally builds on programs in operation for several years that offered transfers from either Delta or Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, to minority students. That program is specifically for African American, Hispanic American or Native American students.

Students will be able to enroll in MTU bachelor of science in engineering (BSE) programs, one focusing on product design and the other on municipal engineering. Course material will be delivered through distance learning on the Internet.

Information meetings are slated at Delta on Tuesday, March 16 from 6-9 p.m. in room C121 of thechemistry/biology wing and the second Wednesday, March 17, from 10 a.m.-noon in room F10 of the health care wing.

Courses are taught by Michigan Tech faculty. Programs are targeted at employed persons or those facing varied time demands.

The BSE in product design emphasises mechanical engineering, including modeling and analytical tools.

The BSE in municipal engineering focuses on civil engineering careers in land development, traffic planning, water and wastewater treatment and municipal planning.

Michigan Tech boasts among the nation's largest university enrollments in Environmental, Mechanical, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering and Technical Communication.

Reservationsfor the information sessions may be made at 800-405-4678 or by e-mail at disted@mtu.edu.
