State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) today reminded Bay City residents they must inform public utility companies before digging or excavating on their property ? a Michigan law designed to prevent residents from serious injury.

"As we enjoy the warmer weather, many of us are starting to think about lawn care and home improvements," Mayes said. "I want to remind residents to give a quick call to MISS DIG in order to save a lot of time and trouble."

Mayes also reminded residents that the colorful flags used to mark underground utility lines can be very attractive to young children. Each flag color marks a different utility: red stands for electric; orange for telephone, cable TV, and fire and police communications; yellow for gas and oil; green for storm drains; blue for water system; brown for sewer systems; and pink for surveying. If your child happens to pull out a utility flag, do not attempt to place it back in the ground. Never assume you remember where the flag was located. Call the utility company or MISS DIG to have the flag replaced.

MISS DIG can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (800) 482-7171 or by simply dialing 811. You can also complete a locate request online at www.missdig.net. Homeowners and excavators must complete a request at least three business days prior to digging.

"MISS DIG can do a lot to keep homeowners safe when they begin projects at home," Mayes said. "Don't forget to call before you dig, and protect your family from serious injury or worse."
