Nine Individuals & Three Teams Inducted Into Bay County Sports HOF

The 19th Annual Bay County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet was held at DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Bay City on October 25, 2009.

Nine individuals plus three teams were inducted -- all coming together with family, friends and fans to celebrate the memorable history of sports in Bay County.

Rod Adams was the Master of Ceremonies for the 10th straight year.

Bay City Mayor Charles Brunner payed tribute to the outstanding athletes and to the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame for their efforts in recognizing these honorees. Sarah Wise sang the National Anthem.


Rod Adams, (L), presented the President's Award to Harold Rupp, (deceased) for his life-long contribution to sports and youth organizations in Bay County. Jennifer Wentworth (Above) accepted the award in honor of her grandfather.


(Above) 1981 Bay City All Saints High School Baseball Team was one of the three teams inducted, along with the 1953 South End Little League and 1970 Roma Inn Softball team. All Saints' 1981 Coach Billy Harris (at podium) introduced his players and shared anecdotes from the 1981 State Championship season.


Approximately 400 supporters including, family, friends, fans were in attendance at the DoubleTree Grand BallRoom to show support for the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame and this year's class of inductees.


In 1994, the Hall of Fame Board of Directors initiated a scholarship program to benefit scholar/athletes in the Bay County School system. Each year, the Hall of Fame Scholarship Committee reviews applications from scholar/athletes and presents a $750 award to one student/athlete from each Bay County school.

Schools include: Bay City Central, Bay City Western, Pinconning High School, Bangor John Glenn, Essexville Garber and Bay City All Saints. The program is now in its 18th year. Forty-five thousand ($45,000) dollars has already been distributed to deserving scholar/athletes.

This Year's Scholarship Recipients were:

  • Cameron Coburn - All Saints High School
  • Katrina VanDenBoom - Bay City Central High School
  • Shane O'Mara - Garber High School
  • Ty Richards - John Glenn High School
  • Matt Leppek - Pinconning High School
  • Keith Tippman - Western High School

    O.J. Cunningham - President, Bob Darbee - Vice President, Bill Herrera - Treasurer, Barney Glowicki - Recording Secretary.

    2009 Hall of Fame Directors include: Vaughn Begick, Esther Conners, Mike Gwizdala, Pat O'Shea, Dave Rogers, Robert Adamowski, and Tim Tobin.
