Students Participate in Michigan History Day Regional Competition

Twenty four Students Advance To State Level

The Bay County Historical Society hosted the Region 5 Michigan History Day 2010 Competition last Saturday. The Region covers ten counties centered on Bay.

Michigan History Day is sponsored by the Historical Society of Michigan and is part of the National History Day competition. Winners at the regional level advance to the state level competition held at The Henry Ford in Dearborn on April 24. Finalists at the state level advance to the national competition held in Maryland each summer.

The 2010 theme is "Innovation in History: Impact and Change". Region 5 students presented papers, displays, web sites, performances and documentaries on topics as varied as sewing machines, the electric guitar, shipbuilding and gunpowder.

History Day "offers a fascinating opportunity to move social science beyond rote learning". Students must do their own research on a topic they choose. They present the results through art, literature, visual communications and writing. Winners at each level refine their presentation based on judges comments then move to the next level.
