Digital 360 Technology Wows Rotary Club Visitors to Delta Planetarium

October 26, 2010
By: Dave Rogers

You just sit back and let the world surround you.

That's what members of the Bay City Rotary Club experienced last Tuesday at the Delta College Planetarium.

Viewers in the theater are enveloped by visual images of almost unimaginable clarity.

The new Delta Digital 360 projection system offers a completely new and exciting visual experience.

Stunning full-color images are splashed all around you on the domed screen immersing you in the action.

Here are some facts about the new technology:

  • 12,000 watts of surround-sound audio add to the unforgettable visual experience.

  • Delta Digital 360 vastly expands the scope of shows that can be offered to Great Lakes Bay Region audiences.

  • The cost of the upgrade was about $1 million dollars.

Journeys into deep space and explorations of the night sky will continue to delight audiences, along with a wide variety of other exciting shows.

The Delta Digital 360 system replaces the Planetarium's original, outdated projector system. No more rectangular-shaped video images produced by slides.

    Sue Montesi
Susan J. Montesi, dean of learning centers and innovative programs, said the Delta system is one of only about 30 such 360 degree capable centers in the nation. The JVC software was said to be the first in the nation when it was installed last February.

The new system is software based, meaning upgrades will be incremental and therefore less costly in the future.

The 360 degree system premiere featuring the new technology was with the new show, "The Enchanted Reef."

The Delta prmotional on this program states: "Let us transport you to a tropical reef, a one-of-a-kind world: colorful and foreign, full of adventure and danger, riddles and mysteries, old legends and myths...a world inhabited by creatures that are humorous and courageous, loveable and bizarre, charming and daring!

"The colorful inhabitants of the mythical reef have always lived in peace until a volcanic catastrophe breaks the spell. See the story of how Jake, a young sawfish, and his buddy Shorty, a lively reef fish, restore the magic to their home by following the legend that tells them how to "touch the moon."

The show is appropriate for adults and children ages 3 plus. Upcoming programs available for public viewing are as follows: Tuesday November 02 - 10:30 AM Public Show - 12:30 PM Big Bird's Adventure: One World, One Sky

Thursday November 04 - 7:00 PM Stars of the Pharaohs

Saturday November 06 - 1:00 PM Cody Coyote's Adventures: Earth, Moon & Sun - 7:00 PM Stars of the Pharaohs.
