Beginning Monday, Dec. 13, Bay City crime data will be made available to the public via the Internet by the Bay City Police Department.

The name of the website where the crime data will be posted, free of charge, is Crimemapping.com.

Crimemapping.com was developed by The Omega Group, a San Diego, California firm, to help law enforcement agencies provide the public with information about recent reported criminal activity in their neighborhood.

This service also is operational in Detroit, Grand Rapids and Jackson.

By making this information available to the public it is hoped that citizens will become more vigilant thus creating more self-reliance among community members. This is a great benefit to community oriented policing efforts and has been proven effective in combating crime and reducing overall crime rates.

Crimemapping.com is a Web based service that provides up to date geographical information on reported crime within Bay City. Citizens can receive this information by visiting Crimemapping.com.

Citizens can also register at Crimemapping.com to receive e-mail updates about reported crimes within Bay City. Crime data is extracted on a regular basis from the Bay City Police Department's records system so that the information being viewed through a Web browser is the most current available.

This data is always verified for accuracy and all address information is generalized by block in order to help ensure privacy is protected.

Citizens can register to receive crime alerts within a specified distance from their home. Alerts can be selected according to the type of crime.
