"I finally got 'em after all these past years trying to match up our schedules with these guys!" said Mike Campau, Entertainment Chair for the Friends of Celtic Culture, a Great Lakes Bay Region organization dedicated to the arts and music of the Seven Celtic Nations. And line up Blackthorn he did.

The Detroit-based Irish folk band is scheduled to perform at the State Theatre, 913`Washington Avenue, Bay City, Michigan, January 22, 2011 at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30. $20 tickets are available at the State and also on the FCC Website, friendsofcelticculture.org.

Blackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. They bring a rich tapestry of Celtic music singing songs of emigration, sea shanties, jigs and reels, and ancient airs while blending in some of Ireland's best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people.

What makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes, tempos, and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments, including wooden flute, accordion, tin whistle, five-string banjo, cittern, bones, and more. These instruments complement the lead vocals of Belfast native Richard McMullen and the bands tight blend of four-part harmony. Joining Richard are Fred Klein, Gary McMullen, and Dennis Green.

Metro Detroiters fondly remember Blackthorn's annual appearances on J.P. McCarthy's St. Patrick's Day show on WJR radio in the 1980s and 90s, and later with Paul W. Smith. They have released seven CDs and have performed with great musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band in 2010. Blackthorn was voted "Best Folk Band" by the readers of the Detroit Metro Times.
