Middle East Perspective in Focus Monday at Chamber Kildee Luncheon

      A personal perspective on the Middle East will be offered Monday by a Congressman who studied in Pakistan --U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee, D-Flint.

      Rep. Kildee, who represents a large portion of Bay County, will be the featured speaker Monday at a Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Congressional Luncheon.

      The luncheon will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn of Bay City, 501 Saginaw St.

      Rep. Kildee, a Democrat, was a teacher in Flint when he was elected in 1964 to the Michigan House of Representatives. He was re-elected to four succeeding terms, was elected to the Michigan Senate in 1974 and to the U.S. House in 1976.

      He is a senior member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and serves as the ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Youth and Families and a member of the Subcommittee on Employer-Employee Relations.

      Rep. Kildee also is a member of the House Committee on Resources, where he sits on the Subcommittee on National Parks and Public Lands and the Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health.


      He has served since 1993 as co-chair of the Congressional Automotive Caucus and was elected by his colleagues in 1997 to serve as co-chair of the Native American Caucus.

      Rep. Kildee was born Sept. 16, 1929 in Flint. He earned a bachelors degree from Sacred Heart Seminary and a teacher's certificate from the University of Detroit and a masters degree from the University of Michigan.

      He completed graduate studies in History and Political Science at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, under a Rotary Foundation Fellowship. He was a teacher at the University of Detroit High School, 1954-56, and FlintCentral High School 1956-1964.###
