EPA Approval Received for USS Edson Destroyer Display in Bay City

Officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have signed a contract granting approval for display of the USS Edson destroyer here.

Richard J. Janke, vice-president, and Michael J. Kegley, president, of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum said they expect to receive a package of approval materials from the EPA that will be sent with a cover letter to the NAVSEA bureau that is in charge of assignment of "retired" ships.

A 60-day waiting period is now running, according to Mr. Janke, and by mid-May all paperwork will have been completed for transit of the 418 foot long vessel here.

Museum officials are casting anxious eyes on the price of diesel fuel for the job of towing that will require two ocean-going tugs for the trip through the St. Lawrence Seaway through Quebec and in the Great Lakes to Bay City.

The ship will be moored at a dock just east of the Independence Bridge where a parking lot will be installed this spring. Estimates are that upwards of 80,000 visitors per year will visit the ship that previously was on display for nearly a decade in New York City. ###
