The board and staff of the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy are pleased to announce a dedication ceremony scheduled for the Bernard & Stella Fegan Nature Preserve on Monday, July 25, 2011, 10:00 a.m., (weather permitting) which the public is encouraged to attend. Tours of the preserve will be offered after the dedication ceremony.

The preserve is located on the north side of Greenwood Road east of Cranberry Lake Road in Richland Township, Ogemaw County, MI. The preserve contains 10 acres of wetland and an adjoining meadow ecosystem which was previously part of a 40-acre homestead established by Bernard and Stella Fegan in the 1930s. The property provides habitat for an array of wildlife including the Blue Racer snake, which is uncommon in Michigan due to habitat destruction. The land was donated to the Conservancy by Bernard and Kathleen Fegan.

"This land not only creates natural areas for recreation and enjoyment, it also helps to preserve the natural wetland ecosystem which will filter pollutants and enhance the water quality of nearby Cranberry Lake," said, Conservancy executive director Valerie Roof. "We want to make the community aware of the preserve and encourage them to utilize it as a community resource."

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy helps maintain the quality of life in the Saginaw Bay Watershed through the preservation of important wetlands, waterways and land of all types. The Conservancy is a non-profit charitable organization working in the Saginaw Basin. To date, the Conservancy has permanently preserved more than 5,600 acres in the watershed.
