Old Time Bay City Independents Baseball

"The Way Baseball Was Meant To Be Played"

On a warm Saturday afternoon, time slipped back many years. At times you could almost hear the backyard laughter of a youth baseball games. Then you looked up and saw a baseball game played at its purist sense. Where fly balls off the trees could be fair, pitchers toss the ball so you could hit it and acknowledgment of an opponent's great play was the rule and not the exception. This was 1865 baseball and the game was between the Bay City Independents and the Saginaw Old Golds.

The two teams are just a growing number of teams that play vintage baseball. It is more than just a reenactment; it was a good and interesting game. Fans lined both base paths with lawn chairs as they watched and conversed with the players.

And the players all have colorful names like "Rainmaker", "Twinkletoes" and of course "Doc". Some spectators wore vintage clothes and there was also music. Not a pipe organ but an autoharp and a guitar. It was truly family entertainment. For more information about the Bay City Independents, check them out on the web at www.baycitybaseball.com.

This year, while the River of Time is going on, the Michigan State Championships are taking place at Carol Park. The first game starts at 9am. To get a taste of this special game, enjoy the sights in the following pictures.

Oh and who won? The Independents scored in the 1st extra inning to win 14-13.

It is nice to see the heritage and tradition is being passed on.

The umpire also served as the announcer educating the fans or "Cranks" as fans were called back then.

Their refreshment container. They swear it was just water and they used tin cups.

A great catch by the Golds' shortstop. Notice no gloves. Third base looked like a killer position

This "striker" as batters were called, really got a hold of this one.

The Golds' third baseman fielded a "Daisy Cutter" (hot ground ball) .

The Independents "striker" hit a "Howitzer" (hit to the long field) and "legged it" or ran swiftly.

This "ballist" was "playing behind" (catcher) and signaled to his "Club" that there were "no hands" or outs. Add to this their nicknames, it was colorful to listen to as well as watch.

Pitchers are required to put the "Apple, Pill or Onion" where the "striker" wants it.

A nice play at the plate (round and metal) to prevent a "Talley" or "Ace".

These performers provided music on the autoharp and guitar.

"Cranks" of all ages lined both sides of the field.

This "Ballist" made a nice "Hand" with this catch in deep left field.

Not to be outdone, the Old Golds' center fielder made a great sliding grab earning himself a "Hurrah" from his opponents.
(MyBayCity Photo by John Keuvelaar)

This was the final "Hand" for a "Side out".

The "Striker" hit a "Croker" to right field and over the fence into a wedding party. While the groomsmen enjoyed the "ballist's" interruption, it is unclear if the bride was cheering the effort or if it "Roused her Dander".

The Saginaw "Ballist" was "putting some steam on it" as he rounded third. Nice looking "Cranks" in the background.

The "Striker" hit a "Daisy Cutter" to the third base.

All these players showed a lot of "Sand" (courage).
