When you are hunting for your first win and playing someone who is also winless, the determination can lead to more trouble.

That is just what happened to Bay City All Saints as they took on the Elkton-Pidgeon-Bay Port Lakers. Cougar fumbles led to Laker scores as the thumb tip boys built a 30-0 lead in the fourth quarter.

But the Cougars figured out a way and came roaring back before a second onside kick failed and the Lakers captured a 30-20 victory.

The Lakers got an early break when they recovered a Cougar fumble on the opening kickoff at the Cougar 27 yard line. Three plays later Lakers running back Evan Gascho scampered 15 yards for a Laker touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

Disaster struck again for the Cougars. After being stopped on their first possession, a botched snap on fourth down gave the Lakers the ball on All Saints 24. The Lakers moved it right down for a Nick Post one yard plunge and a 12-0 Laker lead. The Lakers would score again part way through the second quarter as Gascho punched it in from the one yard line giving the Lakers a commanding 18-0 lead at the half.

The Lakers took the second half kickoff and drove it down field. After grinding out an eleven play drive, quarterback Nick Post took it up the middle for a 5 yard score to make it 24-0 in the third quarter. The Lakers would score one more time in the fourth quarter. After driving to the Cougar 38, the Lakers utilized a fake punt to get a first down at the 18. Then Gascho ran 18 yards to score making it 30-0 with just under nine minutes to play.

That is when the Cougars found some life in their offense. Down by 30 with 8:45 to play, the Cougars first turned to Tyler Cardinal to get things going. Starting at midfield, the Cougars ran it with Cardinal 5 times the last being a 22 yard touchdown run for a 30-6 deficit. On the Cougars next possession they went to the air pulling out all the stops. Backed up on their own 15 yard line, QB William Daniels threw an eleven yard strike to Nick Hunter for some breathing room. Then Daniels hit Hunter on the old hook and ladder play as the receiver pitched the completed pass back to Ben Pijaszek who ran the remaining 50 yards for a touchdown. With a successful two point conversion, the lead was reduced to 30-14.

All Saints was not done. Using the onside kick, the Cougars' Justin Gasta recovered the ball giving extra life to the All Saints faithful. Following two incomplete passes, Daniels ran around right end and busted it loose for a 49 yard touchdown run narrowing the score to 30-20.

But the magic ended there as the next onside kick was recovered by the Lakers. They then ran out the clock and the Lakers had their first victory of the season. Daniels led the Cougars' offense with 110 yards on 15 carries and added 79 yards through the air.

All Saints travels to Cass City next week.
