Diabetes Education Accreditation Renewed

The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) has determined that McLaren-Bay Region's Annual Status Report for AADE DSME/T Program Accreditation has been accepted.

The review process revealed that the hospital's Diabetes Education Program remains in compliance with the National Standards.

AADE Diabetes Education Accreditation Program

By becoming an accrediting body for diabetes education, AADE is striving to provide caregivers such as physician offices, clinics, pharmacies and community centers with a way to ensure that they are offering their patients comprehensive, effective diabetes self-management education and to achieve recognition for their efforts.

AADE is a multidisciplinary association of healthcare professionals dedicated to integrating self management as a key outcome in the care of people with diabetes and related chronic conditions.

McLaren-Bay Region Offers "Get Ready for Golf" Program

McLaren-Bay Region's Center for Rehabilitation will offer the program "Get Ready for Golf" on Tuesday, March 13 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln, Bay City.

Come and get ready for the golf season! Learn a quick routine for a safe warm-up and cool down to reduce pain and fatigue. We'll discuss causes and prevention of common golf injuries, as well as learn easy exercises for swing enhancement and control. Whether you are a novice or an expert, take this opportunity to improve your enjoyment of the game. Presented by: Kevin Foster, Physical Therapist There is no charge to attend. Baby Class for BIG Kids

McLaren-Bay Region will offer a Baby Class for BIG Kids (sibling preparation class) on Wednesday, March 7 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at McLaren-Bay Region, Orlen Johnson Library Conference Room, 1900 Columbus Avenue, Bay City.

This is a 1-½ hour class for children ages 3-8 that are expecting a new baby at home. In this class, children will receive information about fetal development, newborns, getting used to this new addition to the family, sibling safety and the older sibling's role. Class also includes a puppet show, game, hands-on with dolls, crafts, snack and a tour of the nursery.

Teen Night: Childbirth Class Supplement

The next Teen Night: Childbirth Class Supplement sponsored by McLaren-Bay Region is scheduled for Thursday, March 8 from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Childbirth Classroom at the Women's Health Pavilion, 3175 W. Professional Drive, Bay City.

Expectant teens and their support teams are encouraged to attend a Childbirth Cram Session AND a separate Teen Night - a one night class that includes additional information not covered in a cram session, geared toward expectant teens. Information covered includes a healthy lifestyle for pregnancy and postpartum issues.

As a special bonus, teens who attend Teen Night will receive a special gift when they attend the Happiest Baby & Baby's First Massage Class. They are also eligible to attend Infant/Child CPR & First Aid Class. These additional classes are offered at no charge to participating teens!

DIABETES EDUCATION CLASSES AT MCLAREN-BAY REGION

A Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is offered through McLaren-Bay Region. Sessions with a diabetes education nurse and registered dietitian are offered weekly. Topics include diabetes diagnosis and progression, meal planning and carbohydrate counting, knowing your numbers, preventing complications, stress management and goal setting.

Our Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is certified by the State of Michigan Department of Community Health and has met the National Standards of the American Diabetes Association. McLaren-Bay Region offers a variety of prenatal programs for expectant parents and parents of newborns. Classes include:

    McLaren-Bay Region Offers "Parkinson's Exercise & Movement" Class

    McLaren-Bay Region's Center for Rehabilitation is pleased to offer a comprehensive low-cost exercise class designed for individuals living with Parkinson's Disease. "Parkinson's Exercise and Movement Class" is held each Wednesday from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Center for Rehabilitation, 3190 E. Midland Road, Bay City.

    Parkinson's disease is a chronic disorder of the brain that impairs a person's ability to move. Parkinson's causes damage to the part of the nervous system controlling movement, posture, and balance, resulting in stiffness, tremors, slowness, as well as difficulty with balance, walking and speaking. Exercise should be started as soon after diagnosis as possible. Inactivity results in muscle weakness and stiffness. Regular exercise helps to maintain quality of movement and muscle function.

    The Parkinson's Exercise and Movement Class consists of breathing exercises, stretching exercises, postural & balance exercises and proprioception exercises. The class is instructed by a specially-trained physical therapist assistant.

    Participants must bring a signed physician's approval before beginning the exercise program. A nominal fee of $2.00 per session is payable at each class.

    TYPE 2 DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP AT MCLAREN-BAY REGION

    McLaren-Bay Region's Outpatient Diabetes Education Program has scheduled a Type 2 Diabetes Support Group for Wednesday, March 21 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 820 South Lincoln , Bay City. Pre-registration is not necessary. Center for Rehabilitation staff will demonstrate "Exercises for Everyone."

    Come and join us for information, support and fun! Feel free to bring a family member or friend. This support group meets the third Wednesday of each month September through May and features a different health topic and speaker each month.

    The Type 2 Diabetes Support Group is provided as a free service of the Outpatient Diabetes Education Program. For more information, please call (989) 894-9528.
