Debbie Holbein from the Bay City Garden Club updated Rotary on the plans for the next phase of the Kantzler Arboretum in the park. The Arboretum was started in 1981 to celebrate the fifty year anniversary of the Garden Club.
The Arboretum converted an eyesore backwater area on the river into a beautiful park that has become the center of many of today's activities on the river front. The Arboretum is part of a developed recreational area that runs from the marina at the north all the way to the middle grounds island. The rail trail, ball diamonds, boating facilities, picnic areas and grounds for the annual River of Time encampment are part of the area.
Willie Maie McLean and Dick Somalski were two of the original dreamers who started the Arboretum. 57 Skyline Honey Locust trees ere planted in the first phase to represent the 57 members of the Bay City Garden Club who were instrumental in establishing the arboretum.
Recent years have seen trees in need of extra care. Dick Somalski found a new process at MSU's agriculture school called "air-spading fertilization". Using high pressure air and a special tool, the soil around roots is exposed and cleared allowing fertilizer to be applied in a more efficient way.
The next phase of development will be in the open are between the historic Trombley House and the paved walkways. Along with the will be a new entrance way that better identifies the arboretum. New beds and walks will enhance both the arboretum and Trombley house.
