Everyone at the Wednesday in the (Wenonah) Park Abraxas concert was smiling. The music was smooth. The weather was mellow. The breeze off the river was both refreshing and relaxing.

Bay Arts Council Board Members gathered near the stage as the crowd filled in. "It's family fun and it's free, said Sara Moore, as she watched the crowd line up for the evening's music performance.

Board Member Andrea Ondish agreed completely with Moore. "The venue here at Wenona Park promotes the music and the musicians," Ondish said. "It's the perfect complement to Downtown Bay City activities," she added.

Board members Alan LaFave and Bethany Sharp joined in with positive comments concerning the Wednesday in the Park Summer Series. "We set the stage for this event," said LaFave about the work that Bay Arts Council does for the concert series. "We make it possible for the performers to be here."

Board Member Bethany Sharp pointed out that the event sponsors of the Summer Concert Series play a big part in its success. "We can't say thanks enough for all the sponsors do to make it all possible and free to the community," Sharp pointed out.

Most of their fans consider Abraxas to be the definitive Carlos Santana Tribute Band. And, according to their web site, Abraxas shares a passion for recreating the electrifying sounds of Carlos Santana.

PERFECT SETTING -- "We come every week to the park," said Bay City's Angie Kulhanek. Kulhanek and Bill Moore (R) said they attend because they both enjoy the music, the outside venue and the riverside location. "This is the perfect setting," Moore said.

Two years ago, Bay City music fans were awed by the authentic sound delivered by Abraxas during a 2010 visit to Bay City's Wenonah Park Band Shell Summer Series.

"First time they were here," said Matthew Reid, Executive Director of The Bay Arts Council, "they were a last-minute fill-in for a band that had to cancel unexpectedly."

Reid went on to say that after the concert, his phone rang off the hook with congratulatory messages about the band's performance. "People just kept calling for days after their (Abraxas) performance," Reid continued. "It's just great to have them back in Bay City."

Band members are Juan Antonio, leader of Abraxas, who has been playing and studying Santana's music since he was 14. Other band members are Erasto Bernard, John Fallon, Willie Huerto, Niles Hughes, Kenny Kearney and Matthew Murphy.
