"You take the bad with the good, Rise up through it. Live in the mist of it. It's the bad that lets you know how good the good really is. Don't let the bad leave you thinking like there ain't any good. There is, and lots of it, too."

I have a love/hate relationship with cherries.
When the throngs of ripe, Rainer variety of cherries beckoned to me recently, from its pristine display in the produce section of the grocery store, I hesitated.
The promise of their sweet, yet luscious tart flavor against my tongue enticed me to put a rather size-able bunch in my cart in anticipation of their seasonal treat.
While at the same time, with a sense of resignation at the banquet ahead that I know is not a simple one.
Cherries are not a grab and go food.
One must have the patience to maneuver the tooth-cracking, choke-inducing pit. Secondly, one must have a solid plan as to the disposing of the offending pit.
Shall I consume my cherries in my recliner watching 'Frasier' reruns with the fruit and produce variety of a spittoon nearby?
Or will I enjoy them on my deck and practice my pit spitting skills that may come in handy someday should I ever find myself in Traverse City and decide on a whim to join the ranks of the professional cherry pit spitters?
Either way, I came to this realization as I dove into my perfectly ripe, delicious, yet time consuming treat.
Some things in life take planning to be best enjoyed and most things in life should be savored.
Just like cherries, we must maneuver the hard stuff, to get to the good stuff and when we do, it's usually really, really good.
When we take our time to deal with the obstacles to a good thing, the results are almost always worth it. The enjoyment is in the journey and the experience is in the simple, unhurried relishing of it.
That philosophy is the kind a bowl of cherries I need to sit and have more often.
Pits or no pits.
