August Recess is All About Research

August 9, 2012
By: Stacy Sawyer

As Members of Congress head to their home districts for August recess, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) still faces devastating budget cuts scheduled to take effect in January 2013. If Congress fails to act before the end of the year, these cuts - also known as the sequester- will result in many life-saving projects being abandoned due to lack of funding.

The sequester is an across-the board funding cut to many federally funded programs. This means that funding for the NIH could be slashed by more than $2 billion, bringing promising heart and stroke research to a halt and impacting the jobs of the researchers who make those life-saving discoveries possible. You can join us in urging Congress to protect the NIH from the sequester.

American Heart Association You're the Cure advocates are preparing to demonstrate the value of NIH funded research throughout the month - and you can be part of this effort!

Visit www.YoureTheCure.org to learn how you can get involved by:
  • Sending a quick email to your lawmakers right now in support of protecting funding for the NIH!

  • Using Facebook and Twitter to spread the word about how critical research is to preventing and treating heart disease and stroke.

  • Contacting your local AHA to learn about ways you can get involved offline, such as sharing your Research Saves Lives story or meeting with your elected officials. Call 517-349-3157 today.
