Delta College Topic of Talk to Rotary
20th Annual International Night Great Success

Rotarian Deb Lutz, VP of Business & Finance at Delta College, spoke to the club about the successes of Delta and about the upcoming millage supporting the local college.
Delta was started by a committee of 300 tax payers and community leaders from the three counties. Today the school leads in many areas as one of the top community colleges in the country.
Over 800 kids take swim lessons at Delta's pool each year.
Students volunteer over 100,000 hours a year in the community
88% of students find employment after leaving Delta.
The college makes a $385 million annual impact on the local economy.
Delta calculates that students receive a 15% rate of return on education investments.
Students appreciate a 35% increase in earning power from an associates degree.
Deb went on to introduce Dustin Castro, a Delta College graduate who transferred to the University of Michigan where he took a degree in sociology.
Dustin came from a non-college family and didn't see the value of education. After high school he saw the value of education and the affordability of Delta. Professors at Delta showed him that his high school record didn't matter if he would apply himself to the rest of his education.
The Delta experience changed Dustin's life. He found himself inspired by the professors and environment; he started volunteering in the community; and he went on to U. of M. He now has a whole new life ahead of him thanks to his start at Delta.
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
The club held it's regular monthly board meeting today. President Kim reported on the results and reminded the club that ALL members are welcomed to the meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
The board reaffirmed that members who bring potential members as guest may ask Treasurer Doug Rise for a reimbursement of the meal cost one time for those potential members. If the guest shows interest and returns they would be expected to pay for their own lunch, unless the member prefers to do that.
The last Tuesday of the month is designated as Birthday Tuesday. The 50/50 winnings on that day go entirely to the Rotary Foundation in the name of the winner. The board voted that for the next year this donation will be designated to the RI Polio efforts. Members will still get their credit toward their Paul Harris recognition.
Kim also held her monthly "President's Auction" where she auctions off something from her house. This time it was a Longaberger basket full of candy. (Kim admitted to buying at a rummage sale for $5). The basket received quick bids and ended up going for $100!
The district is still looking for a Rotarian to act as GSE Team Leader for the Group Study Exchange team that will go to South Korea March 29 to April 30, 2013. This is a great opportunity. If you're available and interested, please contact Kim as soon as possible!
Reminder: The Foundation Gala to be held in Frankenmuth October 26. The Club will have a table if there enough members so let Bob or Kim know if you plan to attend.

International Night 2012 - From Sea to Shining Sea
On Tuesday the club held it's 20th annual International Night. The theme was "Sea to Shining Sea" and the food was from around the country. The club came out to both attend and to help with setup, greeting, auction, cleanup and all the other work.
Barb Englehardt arranged for flags to decorate the hall. These came from the veterans and the small ones had previously flown over the graves of local soldiers.
American food was featured this year. (For some members this was reason enough to attend!) The room was filled and everyone had a great time.
