DSRC Dishes It Out To Benefit The Handicap

The Disability Services Resource Center held their annual Soup Dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Essexville Thursday night.

This is a great fundraising event that benefits both those who attend and especially those of the community who find themselves needing the DSRC help. Let's face it, we all have to eat dinner and what better way than to have the opportunity to sample soups from the area restaurants as well as breads and desserts. Each year I find the added bonus of the fellowship that an event like this creates.

Aubrey cuts the pies... I think she was also the official taste tester.

The real benefactors of this event is the men, women and children of OUR community that are helped through the efforts of the DSRC. All monies raised are used to help residents of Bay County who have disabilities, whether temporarily or permanent.

While the DSRC is best known for building handicap ramps, they also provide needed medical equipment like recliner lifts, wheelchairs, beds, walkers and other disability medical equipment all FREE of charge to Bay County residents. You just never know when an unexpected accident or illness requires certain medical equipment to help during your recovery. Most medical equipment doesn't come cheap and in your time of need, DSRC can help provide this needed equipment at no cost.

When you think of it, for the price of a soup dinner, you can be helping someone get in and out of their home, get out of a chair of just get around town, tasks we take for granted.

Yum!

I think there was more sour than sweet in that soup.

The DSRC also sponsors the ACES program, All Children Experience Sports, like a fall and winter bowling league as well as a summer softball program. DSRC further provides scholarships for children and adults to go to summer camps like Camp Fish Tales and Camp Fowler. These are awesome events to watch as children experience the thrill of participating in sports in a way we will never fully know. All for the cost of a soup dinner.

Another factor that makes events like this is the involvement of the area business community. Without them, the Soup Dinner doesn't happen. That being said, a special thanks goes to those area business that contributed: Knights of Columbus Essexville, Big Boy on Center Ave. And Euclid Ave., Lumber Barons, Spatz Bakery, Wanigans Eatery, Ponderosa on Center Ave. And Wilder Ave., Linwood Corners, Krzysiaks House, Chen's Buffet, Uno Chicago Grill, Cracker Barrel, Intermission Deli, Hooligan's, G's Pizzeria, Nancy Grandmaison, Kathleen Jamrog, Buffalo Wild Wings, Rally's, Gatsby's, Wanigan Eatery, Texan Restaurant, Burger Restaurant, Mr. Hotdog and the Mandarin House.

The kids really ate it up.

Other fun events they conduct are the Garden Tea Party held in July utilizing their on-site handicap accessible flower garden, a Silent Auction Dinner that will be held on March 29, 2013 and a Pancake Buffet that will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on River Rd. Sunday December 2, 2012. For more information please call DSRC at 895-5444.

Oh yeah. Have to make sure the desserts meet out standards.
