Could you sing Hotel California in front of the Eagles?

How about Hey Jude or Eleanor Rigby in front of Lennon, McCartney and the rest of the Beatles?

Maybe you'd rather try Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man or Just Like a Woman?

It happened at the Kennedy Center Honors recently. The Foo Fighters, Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz and Heart (Ann & Nancy Wilson) along with Jason Bonham (Zeppelin Drummer Jon Bonham's son) performed legendary Zeppelin music as John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant looked on with approval.

The tribute performance was rockin':

  • Foo Fighters (7:05) front man Dave Grohl led his band in a medley of Black Dog and Rock and Roll.
  • Kid Rock (9:25) put his spin on Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and Ramble On.
  • Lenny Kravitz (11:45) got a standing ovation from the nominees as he sang Whole Lotta Love.
  • And for the finale, (13:50) Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson brought down the house with the Zeppelin classic Stairway to Heaven accompanied on the drums by Jason Bonham, son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.

    By the time Kravitz was finished and Heart had started "Stairway", I was off my chair and kneeling on the floor in front of the TV . . . damn near overcome with emotions of joy and appreciation.

    If you're a Zeppelin fan like me . . . Watch the video . . . And "CRANK IT UP."

    It's a once in a lifetime moment. Enjoy.

    The Full Story

    Buddy Guy, Dustin Hoffman, David Letterman, Natalia Makarova, and Led Zeppelin received the (2012) 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors

    The Honors recipients were recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts-whether in music, dance, theater, opera, motion pictures, or television.

    They are selected by the Center's Board of Trustees.

    The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence.

    The Honors are not designated by art form or category of artistic achievement; the selection process, over the years, has produced balance among the various arts and artistic disciplines.

    Buddy Guy is a titan of the blues and has been a tremendous influence on virtually everyone who has picked up an electric guitar in the last half century;

    Dustin Hoffman's unyielding commitment to the wide variety of roles he plays has made him one of the most versatile and iconoclastic actors of this or any other generation;

    David Letterman is one of the most influential personalities in the history of television, entertaining an entire generation of late-night viewers with his unconventional wit and charm;

    Natalia Makarova's profound artistry has ignited the stages of the world's greatest ballet companies and continues to pass the torch to the next generation of dancers;

    and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant transformed the sound of rock and roll with their lyricism and innovative song structures, infusing blues into the sound of rock and roll and laying the foundation for countless rock bands.
