Area Skaters Head to Farmington Hills for State Meet

The Midland Area High School Skating team qualified last Saturday in Alpena to compete at the Michigan High School state finals to be held in Farmington Hills March 23.

The local team consists of skaters from Bay City, Midland, Hemlock, Freeland, Gladwin, Essexville, & Mt. Pleasant, is coached by Teri Haag of Midland and has three levels of teams A, B, and C.

The Michigan High School series consists of 5 districts and 3 competitions in each district.

The top 3 teams with the overall high score qualify in each district to compete at the state level. Teams A and C are district champions and team B finished 3rd. It is a first for the area high school team to have all 3 levels qualify since the program's inception in 1999.

The high school series is Sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating and it hopes to sponsor a National competition in the 2014 season.
