Walk for Your Heart this Saturday -- May 11, 2013
It is time to put on your walking shoes. The American Heart Association's Heart Walk, an annual fundraising and heart health event, will be taking place in the Great Lakes Bay Region on Saturday, May 11 at the Chippewassee Park in Midland beginning at 8:30 a.m. with registration and the walk will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Kelly Reinhardt of Bay City will be at the event celebrating her one year anniversary of surviving a stroke. At just 38 years old, Kelly suffered a stroke that has changed her life. "I'm getting to know the new me - the me that has to think a little longer, make lists and even sounds a little different," said Kelly.
Due to her stroke, Kelly received a stint in her brain, spent 4 weeks in the hospital and a year of rehab therapy. While still in rehab, Kelly decided she was going to give back and share her story to inspire others. "You don't know who is going to suffer a stroke or a heart attack or be born with a heart defect. No one would have thought it would happen to me. That's why it's so important to help."
Several hundred people will be joining Kelly at the Heart Walk, as they each help by fighting back against cardiovascular diseases - diseases that have taken too many lives. In fact, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans and stroke is the No. 4 killer of Americans. But by joining the Heart Walk, everyone is able to raise funds, meet friends and fellow survivors, and know each is making a difference for all those affected by stroke, heart disease and heart defects.
