Veterans and Civil War re-enactors mark Memorial Day at Pine Ridge Cemetery.

BIG CLEANUP: Volunteers From Home Depot, Habitat for Humanity at Pine Ridge

May 27, 2013
By: Dave Rogers

On May 21, 2013 Home Depot & Habitat for Humanity teamed up to help Pine Ridge Cemetery in Bay City, MI, which has been abandoned for many decades.

Paul Cormier headed the team from Home Depot and Ron Graham provided leadership for the community group doing the work.

The cemetery is home to many of the city's earliest pioneers and veterans of the Civil War. In addition to about 200 Civil War veterans and a Grand Army of the Republic monument from 1885, the cemetery is the last resting place for James Birney Jr., lieutenant governor of Michigan in 1860 and son of James G. Birney, twice abolitionist Liberty Party candidate for President, and members of his family.

Nearly $7,000 of materials and equipment was donated to the cemetery, and around 75 employees donated their labor to help improve the grounds.
