I am as confounded by dogs as I am indebted to them. ~ Roger Caras

I have a lap dog.

He connives and sneaks and masterminds his way onto my lap on a daily basis. I often find myself being kissed and slobbered on with his wet nose, while adoring eyes look up at me and I scratch my head and wonder how and when he managed to get there.

It's typical to wrestle for the space occupied by my laptop computer, as he seeks to lay his big skull on the keyboard. He seems not to notice (or care) that it is obvious I'm in the middle of something.

That's right, I said BIG skull.

My "lap dog" is Jagger, a 60 pound boxer-lab mix who thinks he's the size of a tea cup poodle or at the very least a petite and lap-friendly pug.

It made for some uncomfortably warm days during the heat of summer, but I have to admit I do look forward to his warmth during winter's icy chill.

Sometimes I find myself being annoyed at having a furry appendage attached to me on a 24/7 basis, who follows me from room to room and seeks out his place to lay all over me as soon as I sit down. But, most times I am just humbled.

Humbled to have a creature who came to me by no choice of his own. Who ended up with us without any decision making on his part, no opportunity to pick a different home to spend his days and no say in who his pack leader would be.

Yet, he's found his favorite spots to hide his toys, his routine within the cycle of OUR lives and a place to lay his head.

My lap.

Which he appears to really, REALLY like, so I'll let the big lunk have his spot that makes him comfortable.

In all honesty, it makes me feel needed, wanted and warmed by his presence and I will gladly vacuum the couch on a regular basis to have that kind of loyalty which never waivers, no matter what my mood or how hard my day has been.

He reminds me that no matter our size or our age, or our species, it's really all about finding the place that a weary head can lay and find a small bit of comfort.

Worth the price of a lap, no matter the size of the companion, wouldn't you agree?
