These Mule Deer are RUTTING

I don't know about you . . . but everybody around me seems to be talking only about one thing -- The "RUT"

Does ANYONE ever hear the "RUT" word at any other time of year.

In fact, (Now that I think about it) I make it a point to NOT use the word "RUT" word at any time . . . ever.

It might be my heavy Catholic up-bringing --- But "RUT" (from my experience) has a kinda, sorta .... well ..... you know .... you might say a .... dirty, sexual connotation.

For example . . . I don't say "Stuck in a RUT" . . . I always say "Stuck in the Mud."

See what I'm saying?

The incident that really got my attention just this past week was a comment made by a sales rep after a recent early morning sales presentation.

After the meeting, I suggested that we take a quick break and have coffee in the break room.

She declined.

"It's the RUT," she said, gathering up her papers and presentation folders. "I gotta get to the property early tonight and get my sugar beets out." She was emphatic. "It's the RUT," she repeated. "It's happening."

She was 5'-2" and probably didn't weigh in at much over a hundred pounds.

It seemed almost bizarre to hear her keep saying the "RUT" word. And then she kept repeating it for emphasis . . . just in case I didn't hear it the first time.

And I honestly don't care what you think . . . I still say it sounded "dirty" when she said it.

Of course, she's right. It's mid-November here in Michigan and the firearm deer season has just opened (November 15 - December 31) - And as they say (Standing around the Keurig machine) -- The "RUT" is ON.

The "RUT", of course, is the mating season of animals such as our own whitetail deer, some sheep, elk, moose and caribou. (I'm sure there's more species)

During the "RUT" (also known as the RUTting period,) -- See . . . I told you it Sounds Dirty -- males often rub their antlers or horns on trees or shrubs, fight with each other, wallow in mud or dust, and try to herd females together. (Sounds like last call at some local bars)

The "RUT" in many species is triggered by a shortening of the length of daylight hours each day. The timing of the "RUT" for different species depends on the length of their gestation period (length of pregnancy.)

The plan is to have the young born in the spring, shortly after new green growth has appeared (which provides food for the females, allowing them to provide milk for the young), and when it's warmer - So the new kids don't freeze to death.

Just to be thorough, The "RUT" refers to more things than just deer sex.

There's a 50K race in Montana called "The "RUT"." The "RUT" 50K course starts and finishes at the legendary Big Sky Mountain Resort and tests all runners with off-trail exposed ridge lines, forested single-track trails, rugged jeep roads and the lofty summit of an iconic peak -- and it's run between 7,500 and 11,200 feet of elevation.

While researching, I also found a movie planned for 2014 called The "RUT". The Storyline is --- In order to win the approval of her father, a teenage girl surrounds herself with danger and adventure as she journeys into the wilderness alone to hunt deer. Writer is Kevin Caruso and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Ray Liotta.

Then, there's some cartoon references . . .

"RUT Row," is often said by the Jetson's dog, Astro . . .

"RUT Row," is also often used by Scooby-Do to announce danger . . . (SEE DISCLAIMER BELOW)

ONE ADDITIONAL ITEM: If you play Scrabble, here's a helpful hint . . .

I found sixteen eleven-letter words that contain the word "RUT."

HERE THEY ARE: Brutalizing Brutalities Brutalizing Brutishness Inscrutable Inscrutably Over utilize Ruthfulness Ruttinesses Ruttishness Scrutineers Scrutinised Scrutinises Scrutinized Scrutinizer Scrutinizes

Now . . . Only two weeks left . . .

Get out there and get your "RUT" on.

All my life, I always thought that both Astro and Scooby said "Rut Row."
Even though, I found out (today) that they're both saying "Ruh Row" . . . Nonetheless . . . I'm still using the example and the artwork because I spent a lot of time coming up with the Scooby and Astro idea.
