The iconic cowboy riding high above Bay City has ridden off into the sunset, just like hundreds of movie stars do in western flicks.

Despite wide public opposition, the Texan Family Restaurant at 101 Euclid Avenue, in Bangor Township, has closed.

A poll taken by MLive.com attracted nearly 500 respondents, two-thirds of whom did not favor replacement of the restaurant with a CVS Pharmacy.

Many opinions were along the line of "we don't need another pharmacy on Euclid Avenue," where Rite Aid and Walgreens are located nearby.

About 10 years ago CVS sold its Euclid Avenue store to A.T. Frank Floor Covering.

A Facebook posting by a customer, Robert Stedry, showing the sign indicating closing at 2 p.m. Sunday, was the only warning loyal patrons had of the demise of Bay City's only 24-hour restaurant.

West Bloomfield-based TVC Construction Services had petitioned Bangor Township for parking setback variances along Euclid Avenue and North Columbian St., located behind the restaurant. The space would allow for about 60 parking spots, according to plans for the building that were included in a notice about the public hearing sent to Bangor Township residents.

An icon since 1969 on the corner of Euclid Avenue and Midland Road, the Texan Family Restaurant, will be missed by many, according to news reports.

The Bangor Township Zoning Board of Appeals approved variances in support of the construction of a CVS pharmacy on the restaurant site. A site plan and a request for a special exception use permit for the project also were approved at the June 25th meeting of the township's planning commission.

Plans for the pharmacy building include a drive-through pharmacy section and parking for up to 60 vehicles.
