Thinking Out Loud
Let's Talk Turkey

Thanksgiving is a posture of both mind and heart where we recognize how terribly fortunate we are, and how much we've been blessed despite the fact that we probably haven't been the blessing that we should have been.
Craig D. Lounsbrough

I'm so thankful for my family.

Why, you ask? Well, all the obvious reasons of course.

They are supportive of me. They encourage me. They are there for me when I need them. They're unfailingly witty and funny. They're bright, articulate, well-spoken members of our society.

But this time of year, I believe I love them the most because the only thing they ask me to bring to our Thanksgiving feast is dinner rolls.

Which I buy at the local bakery.

Already baked.

You see, they know much I hate to cook, but love to eat. So they invite me to the fabulous dinner they spend an entire day cooking, give me the simplest of culinary tasks so I can feel I have contributed and then thank me for coming.

They overlook the fact that I have never basted a turkey in my own oven my entire adult life and I am not prone to giving family dinner parties.

They accept there will never be any recipes from Aunt Diane passed down to future generations and it's not likely I'll ever be famous for anything edible.

I am a fortunate woman to have that kind of love and acceptance. I am eternally thankful and I will be certain to mention it to them again this Thanksgiving.

Right between "pass the potatoes" and "yes, I'll have a piece of pumpkin pie".
