John Custincic, Director of the Alden B. Dow Center for Creativity and Enterprise at Northwood University, spoke to Rotary about LAB, the Learning About Business Summer camp hosted by Northwood University.
Sponsored by the Dow foundation and hosted by Northwood, the program brings in 60 kids, recommended by their teachers, for one week sessions at Northwood. The students are housed on campus and go through a program that teaches teamwork and business skills.
The majority of students come from the Detroit area and enter an environment that they might not otherwise experience.
The program runs from June 21 to 26 this year. For students the cost is as low as $50 for the week. If they can't afford that then scholarships cover their portion. The true cost of the sessions is made up from the foundation.
During the test of the summer the program features one day mini sessions for high school students from around the area. These sessions compress many of the same lessons into that one day. The sessions are facilitated by Northwood students who plan and run the programs.
The goal of the programs is to promote free-enterprise, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and creativity in business. The week long program features a different topic each day: Teambuilding and leadership, Fundamentals of Business, Marketing and Public relations, International Business, Management and Entrepreneurship.
Fun, knowledge and friendship lead to clarity and insight for future business students. Surveys of the students show that the objectives are being met.

bob Chadwick spoke about the Golf Outing which occurs next week (this week) on June 17. He read the long list of sponsors that will be recognized at the event. If you don't plan to golf, you are still invited to make the dinner. And, of course, get your raffle tickets for the 60 inch TV.
The club Board met today. Among the items passed is a dues increase of 75 cents to cover RI and District increases. The board clarified the policy with a motion to "pass through" any such increase that may occur. On the same note, The Doubletree is raising the lunch fee from $11 to $12. The club will begin assessing that on July 7. The dues statements have been mailed and reflect these increases.
