Idalski, Moore, Welch
Angel Moore, Jen Idalski, and Rotarian Tara Welch talked to Rotary about Leadership Bay County, the community education program run by the Chamber of Commerce for almost 30 years. When asked to hold up their hands, a number of past graduates were in the room. In the words of Ryan Carley of the Chamber, "LBC is an education, from stem to stern, of all that occurs in Bay City."

LBC focuses on three key initiatives connectivity leading to life long friendships, advocacy for getting people involved, and education in becoming better leaders. Graduates go on to work as leaders in the community and community non-profits.

Angel Moore works for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Great Lakes Bay Region. She was a member of the last class and got involved in the street art projects. Her organization finds it difficult for employees to get out and see all the things going on in the area. LBC is an opportunity for those people to follow a structured program to visit and learn about what's going on over a year's period.

Among the programs covered are
  • Human Needs and Services
  • Economic Development
  • History
  • Agriculture
  • Local Government
  • Public Safety
  • Education
  • Arts & Culture
  • Natural Resources

Each year's class selects a community project from requests from Chamber member organizations. Tara Welch from Studio 23 talked about that process and about this year's street art theme. The highlight this year is the "Compass Rose with Sailboat" painted on the street at the intersection of Center and Water outside the Planetarium. The art was studied and selected to have a long lifespan even with Michigan seasons and with regular traffic.

Jen Idalski from the United Way of Bay County talked about how businesses can send their employees to LBC as an investment in organization and business. Students learn early in the program how to identify strengths and personality types then form more effective and cohesive groups that get the most out of the talents of the members.

LBC kicks off each year with a two-day retreat. In the past, this was on a weekend but was moved to a Thursday-Friday to allow more students to better schedule it around their family and other weekend duties. "Our class then learned about the history, industry, natural resources and social aspects of the community", said Jen. "I know because I've become our family's official tour guide, whether they like it or not."

This is an educational program, and participants are students who graduate. As such, attendance is required. But the program does recognize scheduling difficulties and a person has the opportunity to complete the course over a four-year period, if necessary.

About twenty people a year go through the program. There are a few openings left for anyone who is interested.

    CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The "Running Dead" fundraiser is getting into full swing. Tara Welch and Chris Girard were manning the table outside the meeting room to hand out the promotional tee-shirts that had been ordered. Be sure to pick yours up.

The Community Grants cycle is open. Applications may be made through the club website.

President Andrea read a letter from District Governor Cheryl outlining a district training team that will travel to Uganda for two weeks in Mid-January. The trip is sponsored by clubs in this district. If you are interested in going, please see Andrea.

Vocation Day 2016 is been scheduled for November 1. Matt Felan said "that's just 3 months from today". Seven area schools will participate. Forms will be coming next week. If you can, consider taking a student to shadow your job and company.

City Manager Rick Finn gave a short update on the City Commission's approval of funds to start a program of video security cameras in strategic locations around town. "I know some people think it sounds a little like 'Big Brother'", said Finn. But he explained that the cameras will be on public property and shouldn't violate any privacy. He also pointed out that all major stores and businesses have cameras already. "This is a milestone for a community our size", he said. "We already have a safe community and this will make it even better."

If you have not paid your July to December dues, please get that in. If you need another invoice, ask Steve Kent.
