Carley Talks To Rotary About Chamber Of Commerce

Chambers cater to three general sectors: public and government, private business and the public at large. The primary goal of the Chamber is to take everybody's initiatives and synthesize them to create the best community it possibly can.
The mission of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is to be a membership organization joining businesses and the community for economic growth and well-being of the entire Bay Area.
The vision is to be the premier business organization promoting community development through collaboration and leadership.
By creating the right community the economy will grow itself because people will want to go there. Ryan noted the energy we have in Bay City, in particular in the downtown area as examples of what we want.
Priorities of the Chamber's Public Affairs Division include working with the Bay Area Community Foundation and local governmental and private sector to implement the Bay County Road Map to the Future. They will also take a lead role in advocating for improved beach access and waterways utilization. And they work to improve collaboration with local government, economic development, and other key organizations to improve the quality of life initiatives.
The Membership Development Division is working to promote the Energize Bay Area Young Professional Network, the maintain and enhance communication efforts with all parties, and to survey the Chamber membership to garner feedback.
The Education/Workforce development Division coordinates Reading is Bay County's Business. It creates a cradle to career continuum to align programs and activities between business and education. And it coordinates Mock Job Interview program for 9th to 12th crate students.
In answer to questions, Ryan was proud to relate seven percent growth recently. The Eye Opener Breakfast program is a success case in point.
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
The board met today and Andrea reported on the highlights of that meeting. Besides the normal business and reports on the upcoming Zombie Run and the recent golf outing, the board reviewed goals for the coming year.
Chris Girard reported on the "Running Dead" fundraiser scheduled for October 8. The board approved a $5,000 collaboration with the Land Conservancy for a project to be determined. The hope is for the club to participate in that project. The website and Facebook page for the site are up and running. T-shirts were sold recently but there are some extras if you are interested.
Tim Holsworth reported that last year's Golf Outing raised almost $11,000, all of which went to Bay City Schools for technology. This year the committee recommended, and the board approved, that 80% of the funds go to a specific project, the Schools again, and the remainder will go to our local foundation to fund our other projects. Another record was reached with $11,372 being raised. The hope is to raise even more next year.
Dee Dee Wacksman brought peanuts and spread them on all of the tables. This was in honor of President Jimmy Carter, who's Plains Georgia home is close enough to the next International Rotary Convention in Atlanta that you would plan a visit. Dee Dee mentioned other areas of interest and encouraged everyone to consider attending that convention next June.
The Community Grants cycle is open. Applications may be made through the club website.
Vocation Day 2016 is been scheduled for November 1. That's just 3 months away. Seven area schools will participate. Forms will be coming next week. If you can, consider taking a student to shadow your job and company.
