Get ready for the holidays this Sunday, December 11th, when the
Bay Concert Band and the
Sweet Adelines will present a joint holiday concert. The event is scheduled for 3:00 pm in the Bay City Central High School Auditorium.
The program will feature traditional holiday music including
Leroy Anderson's famous
"A Christmas Festival"
and
Bill Holcombe's
"Christmas Jazz Suite", an arrangement of popular carols played in a "Big Band" era style.
The program will also include Stephen Bulla's
"Rhapsody for Hanukkah", a collection of songs associated with the celebration of Hanukkah. The original composition was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and then rearranged for symphonic band.
As a special treat, the band will present the David Lovrien composition entitled
"Minor Alterations (Christmas Through the Looking Glass)". This unique piece twists favorite Christmas melodies into something new and inventive. Carols are changed from major to minor keys, styles change, and the tunes overlap. The result is a wistful and energetic creation written for the concert band.
"Minor Alterations" is actually a follow-up to the well received and decidedly entertaining
piece presented in last year's holiday concert. That piece was "Minor Alterations II (Carols from the Dark Side)".
This year the Concert Band will be joined by the
Try-City Chorus of Sweet Adelines International under the direction of Mrs. Pat Osborne. The chorus will feature guest artists and will join the band and audience for a
"Merry Christmas, Everyone" sing-along, which will conclude the concert.
Admission is $5 for adults with students sixth grade and under being admitted free. Tickets are available from Herter Music Center, State Theatre, the gift shop at McLaren Bay Region Medical Center, at the door or any band member. Please join the band for a relaxing and enjoyable start to this festive season.
