Diane Fong
Diane Fong from the Bay Area Community Foundation spoke to Rotary about the Foundations "Bay Commitment Scholarship Program", a program that assists students who might not go to college to take that step and succeed.

It all focuses around the high school student who's on the verge of graduating. Fong cited some facts about today's college student:
  • 37% are 25 years old, or older.
  • 46% are first-generation students.
  • 64% of students work, and 40% work full time.
  • 49% are financially independent from their parents.
  • 24% have children or other dependents.
  • A significant number face food insecurity or homelessness and poverty.

Given these numbers it's not surprising that the US ranks 13th in college attainment worldwide!

The challenges faced by students are higher with young adults that come from low-income families. Only 11% of those students earn a degree by age 24. The statistic for students from high-income families is 58%. These numbers are even more meaningful when one considers that by 2020 two thirds of jobs require post-secondary training.

The BACF works with students through their "Great Lakes Bay College and Career Resource Center." The program was started some ten years ago by a group of concerned citizens, many from this Rotary Club. Over the years the program has helped local students to pursue post-secondary degrees. These students show a higher rate of graduation and a commitment to succeeding.

Fong went on to profile some of the success stories and give examples of the way the Resource Center provides assistance.

    CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

    OFF SITE MEETING - June 4, 2019
Meet at the Pere Marquette Depot

The Tall Ship Celebration is coming to down in mid-July. As always, Rotarians will fill a number of volunteer jobs. See Nancy Greve for details and to volunteer.

Remember to sell your Golf Outing Raffle Tickets. The prize will again be an I-pad computer with AirPods. See Cindy Chadwick for details.

The district has requested assistance with housing and transportation for a Rotary Global Scholar from Pakistan who will be in the area June 10 to 13. If you can assist, please tell Harvey.

The district also asked for help recruiting OUT-bound foreign exchange students. We have had a regular stream of inbounds, but it's been a while since anyone went abroad from our area. Informational meetings are planned in the next weeks.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute" Chuck Cusick related the work of Elias Thomas from the Sanford-Springfield, Maine club. Thomas, with the help of the Rotary Foundation, started his "Rain Trust" in India. With the help of other Rotarians, the Trust builds catchment dams which collect rainwater from the annual monsoon and hold it for the dry season. Yet another example of the work of the Foundation around the world.

The club will meet off-site on these dates:
        June 4 - The Depot
        June 18 - Marriott Uptown
        July 30 - Marriott Uptown

    COUNTING DOWN

At the board's direction, these Breezes, the club web site,
and the member database will be dropped as of July 1, 2019.

Replacing these systems, used for the last fifteen years, will be the Club Runner program. If there are features of the current system that you like or rely on, be sure to ask board members or incoming administration if there will be a replacement for that feature.
