Making The Connection . . .

Want a healthy body? You need to start with a healthy mouth. These are very true words from the American Dental Association. You might not realize this but the body is one unit. Everything is connected. The health of your mouth has a great affect on the health of your body as a whole.

Research studies show that periodontal infection can be linked to systemic diseases or conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, artery blockage, stroke and pre-term delivery, low birth-weight babies.

The good news is that there is something you can do. Given the potential link between periodontal infection and systemic health problems, prevention may be an important step in maintaining overall health.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily. Remember to clean between your teeth with floss or another type of interdental cleaner, such as a water-pik.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks, which may reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Schedule regular dental checkups. Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar, which traps plaque bacteria along the gumline.
  • Tell your dentist about changes in your overall health, particularly any recent illness or chronic conditions. Provide an updated health history including medication use -- both prescription and non-prescription products. If you use tobacco, talk to your dentist about options for quitting.
  • If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, pay special attention to your teeth and gums. The reason being is because pregnancy and the changing hormone levels that occur with it can exaggerate some dental problems.

So, make the connection. There are more reasons to take good care of your teeth and gums. It isn't about just preventing cavities or bad breath. It's about being a healthier you.
