MILLIKEN SPEAKS: Michigan's Longest Serving Guv Picks Peters for Senate

Proposal 3 Clean Energy, Gov. Rick Snyder Also Backed by Milliken

This corner is ambivalent about Snyder, especially because of his failure to bring the GOP dominated legislature together to provide funding for desperately needed road repairs.

Former Governor Bill Milliken, who is known for his independent stances, has backed former Democratic Congress Member Gary Peters over former Michigan Secretary of State Terry Lynn Land for the U.S. Senate.

However, Milliken returned to the party line by standing with Gov. Rick Snyder who is in a tight race with Mark Schauer, although he was critical of the turbulent atmosphere and "lack of a clear vision" in Lansing.

Snyder was the subject of protests when he spoke this weekend in Flint, with local officials and demonstrators focusing on the pension tax on senior citizens and the perceived reduction in funding for schools -- which Snyder denies.

This corner is ambivalent about Snyder, especially because of his failure to bring the GOP dominated legislature together to provide funding for desperately needed road repairs.

If it takes a tax increase, governor, please bite the bullet and get the road repairs underway before another winter degrades them any more. This is the most visible sign of weak leadership, apparent to every motorist every day on our highways.

The Guv boasts of adding 300,000 jobs and of lowering the unemployment rate, but the Right to Work law he fostered has created many unhappy campers, especially in the education community that seems to be targeted.

Destroying unions that are sacred bastions of protection for many vulnerable workers cannot help to unite the working class populace in the quest for a stronger economy.

Peters has about a 10 point lead in the polls over Land despite being hit with an estimated $18 million in negative advertising from the Koch brothers and Karl Rove conservative campaign groups.

Expect groups backing Snyder to cast millions of media advertising dollars against Schauer, who will be lucky to stay even with the Guv. Elections these days, it seems, are determined by bucks not issues.

The unemployment claim turns hollow under scrutiny as Michigan is ahead of only Georgia (7.8%) and Mississippi (8.0%) and tied with Rhode Island and Nevada for 48th place nationally at 7.7 percent, according to the National Council of State Legislatures.

Michigan's longest-serving governor, Milliken also has enthusiastically endorsed Proposal 3, saying that the measure can make Michigan a world leader in clean energy manufacturing.

"I think the opportunity of renewable energy in Michigan is important enough that the 25 percent renewable policy should have the long-term certainty of Constitutional protection," Milliken said, commenting:

"Two things we can count on are that the wind will continue to blow and the sun will keep on shining. And unlike the volatility and uncertainty of energy prices from coal, oil, and natural gas, we can confidently forecast the cost of renewable energy, which is steadily declining and already competitive with coal and other fossil fuels."

Milliken served as Michigan's governor from 1969 to 1983. He recalled:

"When I served as Governor, I worked to unite the many voices of Michigan around a shared vision for our state's people, economy, and environment. That kind of collaborative spirit is hard to come by these days in Lansing.

"As a result, an important issue like how we generate electricity to keep the lights on in our homes and run our businesses lacks a clear vision for the future. And that means Michigan is falling behind other states when it comes to harnessing clean, renewable energy from the sun and wind, and the important jobs that this emerging sector can create," Milliken added.
