Governor Snyder Fires Up Huge Crowd
at Bay Area Chamber On the Go Event

The governor they call "the Nerd" really fired up the sold-out crowd at the Bay Area Chamber "On the Go" event on Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel-Bay City Riverfront.

Chamber President Mike Seward handed out six awards to the Bay County Farm Bureau, Duane Scheuerlein of L & M Scheuerlein, Inc., Ittner Bean and Grain, Bay View Food Products, Dow Agri Sciences, and Michigan Sugar Company.

"Relentless Positive Action" was the message Gov. Rick Snyder (Left) delivered to the 550 luncheon attendees, and they loved it!

Agriculture, theme of the conference, is "one shining star," the governor stressed, pushing exports to the world in advance of his trip to Japan, China and Korea.

The blueberry story tells it all: the governor related how a Chinese visitor he encountered recently said "we will take all you can grow, we love blueberries." Michigan is the nation's largest producer of the succulent berries.

Ag is so important, he said, that the first person he called to join him on the Far East trip was Keith Creagh, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

"I'm proud to be a nerd, and it's great to be in Bay City," said Gov. Snyder after being introduced by State Sen. Mike Green, R-Mayville. "The governor is taking a new approach to doing things -- he prefers to call it re-invention," said Sen. Green.

Boosting the state's balanced budget that will pay down long term liabilities, the governor said it is "a model which the federal government needs to follow." The statement drew cheers from the crowd.

The toughest part of his job so far has been trying to change the culture in the state, said the governor. "In many respects we have gotten too far down on ourselves," he said, admitting that the fight over "the shrinking pie" is not helpful.

The governor sounded like a cheerleader, stressing solving problems and not worrying about assigning blame or who gets the credit. Establishing a culture of success should be our goal, he said.

He defused questions about the proposed elimination of the personal property tax by saying it is a long-term idea that won't be mandated by the state. He called the tax "not efficient and a job killer" and said: "We need to open a dialogue to look for longer term solutions and make sure local jurisdictions have new sources of revenue."
