This past Wednesday at the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission, Bay City's local homeless shelter, students from the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center brightened the days of countless individuals as they brought over 2,800 items of food to the shelter.

"The whole thing was coordinated by myself, Jaclyn (LaBean) and Lawrence (Florida)," said David Urlaub, a student counselor at the Career Center. After touring the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission in March, LaBean and Florida were motivated to do their part and help out. "They went around the ISD, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, collecting food for two straight weeks."

"Helping people who are less fortunate is a valuable lesson to learn," adds Urlaub. It's a lesson that seems to be sinking in at the Career Center. In all, since 2008, students at the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center have donated 5,711 items of food to the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission.

The local student officer team from Bay-Arenac's chapter of SkillsUSA, a national student organization that prepares students to be leaders in the workplace, assembled the food into a "food sculpture". David Urlaub said, "I am thrilled with the amount of food the students brought in this year. The students here at the Career Center learned to be community-minded citizens."

This year, the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center constructed a boat, complete with swimmers. The "food sculpture" will be entered in a state-wide food sculpture contest held during the SkillsUSA Michigan State Championships which is Friday April 20th - Sunday April 22nd, 2012 in Lansing.

2009 - Sculpture Best Portraying SkillsUSA - Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center;
