TENNIS FUNDRAISER: Coonan's Irish Hub to Host BCTA Party Aug. 7
Bay Community Tennis Association Halfway to $500,000 Goal
Local tennis enthusiasts aiming to build eight new tennis courts at 325 Park Avenue are about halfway to their $500,000 goal.
Supporters of the project are eager to see the courts built on the site of the former Thomas Jefferson School at Park Avenue and Boehringer Court. The building there recently was torn down, said Dr. Jerry Schloff, who heads fundraising along with Joe Ricard, Central High coach.
The Bay Community Tennis Association will hold a fundraiser Sunday, Aug. 7 at Coonan's Irish Hub, Johnson Street, that will include a silent auction.
Donations for the project and the auction are coming from all directions, including four tennis nets donated by the Park Ridge Illinois Country Club through tennis teaching pro, Matthew Pangborn, native Bay Cityan who attended Thomas Jefferson School.
Pangborn put the nets in his car and drove here this week and delivered the nets to Dr. Schloff, who said: "What a great donation by the Park Ridge Country Club and Mr. Pangborn; this will save us about $3,600 and will provide half the nets we need."
Dr. Schloff added: "The community is really coming together to support this project and we look forward to a big turnout Sunday, Aug. 7 to add to our fundraising."
BCTA has a Facebook page that lists information about silent auction items and opportunities to donate.

Said Mr. Ricard: "Our own Bay Community Tennis Association was selected as one of only twelve groups throughout the Midwest to be part of a one-month fundraising campaign!! Hurray!
"The campaign is sponsored by the Midwest Youth Tennis and Education Foundation and is part of the USTA (United States Tennis Association). The campaign only lasts from October 1st to October 31st. Please look at the cool video which is part of our website and share it with any and ALL of your friends NOW! Also, make sure everyone notices the DONATE button."
